Global food commodity prices rose modestly in July, but underlying trends suggest growing exposure to climate, energy, and geopolitical risks. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) Food Price Index averaged 131.1 points, a 0.6% increase from June and 1.0% above the level seen in July 2025.

Cereals, vegetable oils, and sugar drove the rise, while meat and dairy prices fell. The FAO Cereal Price Index rose 3.4% from June, with wheat prices increasing 5.8%, driven by concerns over continued disruptions to Black Sea export flows and heatwaves affecting yields in major producing countries.

Sugar prices also jumped 5.6%, as hot and dry weather raised concerns about potential crop-yield effects in the European Union and uncertainty over production prospects in important Asian producing countries. In contrast, meat and dairy prices fell, with the FAO Meat Price Index dropping 2.8% from its record high in June.

The growing connection between food and fuel markets is also a key factor. Palm oil quotations rose amid firm demand from Indonesia's biodiesel sector and higher crude oil prices, while soy oil prices increased supported by strong feedstock demand in the United States and global import demand.
