Food Prices Soar to Three-Year High Amid Weather Disruptions
The world food price index has reached its highest level since late 2022, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The FAO's Food Price Index averaged 133.3 in August, up from a revised July reading of 130.8.
The increase is attributed to adverse weather conditions, including extreme heat and drought in Europe, as well as trade disruptions caused by the Ukraine-Iran wars and the threat of an El Nino weather pattern in Asia.
Grain prices have reached a three-year-high, while sugar prices are at a one-year-high. The FAO's index of cereals prices rose 2.2% on a monthly basis, reaching its highest level since May 2024.
