Ford Pushes for Quick Pipeline Build, Citing Canadian History

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has proposed building a pipeline from Alberta to Ontario within less than five years. He drew parallels between this project and Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald, who built a railroad across the country in four-and-a-half years.

Ford is advocating for Northern Shield, a 3,300-kilometre oil pipeline from Hardisty, Alberta to Sarnia, Ontario. He claims that his government is willing to invest capital into the project, but did not specify how much money would be involved.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith expressed support for the timeline but stopped short of committing her province's funding. Former CEO of the Alberta Petroleum Marketing Commission Richard Masson warned that private sector financing may not be sufficient and suggested that government backing could be necessary to fund the estimated $30 billion project.
