France Deploys Troops to Saudi Arabia Amid Escalating Houthi Attacks
France is deploying troops and defense systems to Saudi Arabia to protect energy facilities in Yanbu on the Red Sea from Houthi attacks. The mission, led by French President Emmanuel Macron, aims to safeguard energy infrastructure and intercept incoming threats.
Macron stressed that French forces are not being sent to conduct offensive operations or become directly involved in the conflict. Instead, their task is to protect energy facilities and prevent further disruptions to global markets.
This move is part of France's existing presence in the Middle East, with around 1,500 military personnel stationed in Djibouti and another 750 in the United Arab Emirates. The deployment to Saudi Arabia allows Paris to expand its presence quickly, leveraging its existing infrastructure and capabilities.
The Yanbu region is crucial for Saudi Arabia's oil exports through the Red Sea, bypassing the Strait of Hormuz. French involvement aims to secure this vital export route and protect both Riyadh's interests and France's own economic interests.
