Freeport-McMoRan Rides Copper's Record Run Higher Amid Tight Supply
Freeport-McMoRan (NYSE:FCX), one of the largest publicly traded copper producers in the US, is benefiting from record-high copper prices. The company's stock has tracked the tight copper market, where supply struggles to keep pace with demand from electrification, renewable-power grids, and construction across advanced computing sites.
The Grasberg complex in Indonesia, one of the largest copper and gold operations in the world, is recovering after a major mudslide event last year. The company has described a path that lifts production toward substantial capacity during the back half of this year, with a return to full running rates expected by the end of next year.
Alongside Grasberg's recovery, Freeport-McMoRan is leaning heavily on innovation in leaching, a process that recovers copper from material once treated as waste. The company has framed leach expansion as a source of low-cost tonnes that require modest fresh capital because the ore is already mined and stacked.
