Freeport-McMoRan Sinks 11.9% as Refined Copper Tariff Doubts Hit Sector
Freeport-McMoRan's (NYSE:FCX) stock price has dropped to $70.66 after news broke out about refined copper tariff doubts hitting the sector, causing a 11.9% decline from its record high of $80.24 in August.
The company operates major mines in Arizona and New Mexico, including a 72% stake in Morenci, and the market had priced in a benefit for domestic metal due to potential tariffs on refined imports.
However, the September 10 report questioning whether that benefit will arrive caused a sharp pullback in the stock price, with Freeport sinking 8% on that day while Teck Resources and Southern Copper each dropped 7%.
The tariff debate matters for Freeport because of where it sells copper, and if refined copper is never tariffed, the metal parked in U.S. warehouses becomes surplus in a market that no longer needs it.
