Freeport-McMoRan Touches All-Time High Amid Copper Price Surge

Freeport-McMoRan (NYSE:FCX), the largest listed American copper producer, has reached an all-time high as copper prices set fresh records on American import duty threats. The metal itself touched peak levels in three out of four sessions before easing back as traders took gains.

The proposed duty on refined copper imports is causing a distortion in the physical market, pulling extraordinary volumes of refined metal into domestic warehouses ahead of the deadline. This has drained inventory from international exchange stocks, tightened availability outside the United States, and converted what had been a projected global surplus into something closer to balance.

Recovery at the Indonesian Grasberg complex continues on a staged timetable following last year's mudslide, with full-rate output pushed into the latter part of the decade. The company announced an agreement extending its operating rights in the Grasberg district for the life of the resource earlier this year, providing significant certainty in a jurisdiction where mining tenure has been renegotiated repeatedly.
