Freeport-McMoRan Unveils Copper Growth Plan at Morgan Stanley Conference
Freeport-McMoRan (FCX), a major player in the copper market, presented its growth plan at Morgan Stanley's Laguna Conference. The company's CEO, Kathleen Quirk, highlighted three key drivers of growth: the recovery of the Grasberg mine in Indonesia, the expansion of the Bagdad mine in Arizona, and a technology push to recover copper from stockpiles that have already been mined.
The Grasberg mine has made significant progress since an unusual mud rush incident in mid-2023. Production is expected to reach 65% of capacity by the end of 2024, with full capacity anticipated by the end of 2027. The company's Indonesia smelters are also operating at high levels.
The Bagdad mine expansion is a key part of Freeport-McMoRan's strategy to expand existing assets rather than relying on new greenfield mines. The project will convert haul truck fleets to autonomous operation and explore off-site component manufacturing to address labor availability issues.
The company's technology push, which involves recovering copper from stockpiles using leaching, has the potential to become a major source of growth. Freeport-McMoRan aims to produce 300 million pounds of copper per year from this process by the end of 2024, with potential output reaching 800 million pounds within three to four years.
