French Wheat Returns to Yemen After Four-Year Absence
After a four-year hiatus, Yemen is set to receive its first shipment of French wheat since September 2022. The cargo, totaling 60,000 metric tons, will arrive at Yemeni ports as local importers seek alternative suppliers amid ongoing market disruptions.
A bulk carrier has completed loading the shipment, which includes 40,000 tons from Rouen and 20,000 tons from Dunkirk in northern France. This marks a significant shift in Yemen's grain import patterns, with French wheat now becoming more competitive due to improved quality resulting from dry and hot weather conditions.
Despite being the European Union's largest wheat producer, France faces growing competition from Romanian wheat exports, which have expanded their presence in global markets. The arrival of the French shipment is expected to support wheat supplies in Yemen, where food security remains a major concern amid prolonged conflict and economic challenges.
