FTSE 100 Surges as US-Iran Diplomacy Brings Oil Price Relief
British stocks rose on Wednesday as hopes for a diplomatic resolution to the US-Iran conflict pushed oil prices lower and lifted risk appetite across European markets.
The FTSE 100 index gained 0.36% as of 03:15 ET, while Germany's DAX added 0.13% and France's CAC rose 0.36%.
The US-Iran conflict has been a major concern for global markets, particularly with regards to oil prices. However, the recent diplomatic efforts have brought some relief, with U.S. President Donald Trump stating that envoys held a 'very good' three-hour meeting with an Iranian delegation on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The meeting was facilitated by mediators who 'shuttled between the two sides throughout the day,' according to US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. Iran conveyed its conditions through Qatari mediators, which included a halt to hostilities on all fronts, removal of the US naval blockade and release of seized assets.
Saudi Arabia has also begun restoring crude supply on a critical Red Sea pipeline, adding to supply-side relief. However, Strait of Hormuz shipping traffic remains severely depressed, with only three commodity vessels transiting the waterway on Tuesday against a 10-day moving average of around 15.
