Fuel Crisis Wrecks Poland's Transport Industry
Poland's transport industry is facing an unprecedented crisis due to surging oil prices. Since the US and Israel launched military strikes against Iran in February, fuel costs have skyrocketed, putting a strain on transport companies. Andrzej Szymanski, managing director of a Polish transport company with over 20 years of history and a fleet of more than 500 trucks, said that the current crisis is the worst he has ever seen.
'Today, with this huge increase of fuel price, we are losing money because this increase is unexpected and huge in a very short time. So we have a problem to deal with it,' Szymanski said. The company's costs have increased by over 20% in a short period, making it 'a really very, very difficult situation.'
The sharp rise in transportation costs has triggered a wave of bankruptcies among Polish transport enterprises. Over 700 companies have declared bankruptcy this year alone.
