Fuel Price Hikes Loom Amidst Global Shortages
The Irish Government has temporarily delayed the reintroduction of fuel excise duties and levies, providing some relief to fuel users who have seen rapid increases in prices recently.
The main driver behind these price hikes is a global shortage of diesel due to reduced output from refineries in the Gulf region and Russia. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has also disrupted oil shipments, keeping Brent crude prices elevated at around $90 per barrel.
Natural gas prices are also expected to rise significantly as Europe's winter stockpiles are currently at just under 63% of capacity, the lowest level for this time of year in at least five years. This will have a direct impact on electricity bills and fertiliser costs for farmers.
The Government has stated that the best way to mitigate these economic challenges is through de-escalation in the Middle East, allowing for the resumption of oil shipments and a decrease in fuel prices.
