Fuel Price Protests Spread Globally as Oil Costs Reach New Heights
Global protests are erupting as fuel prices surge due to conflicts in the Middle East and other global events. Syria has seen hundreds of oil tanker trucks stranded on roads, while Guatemalan transport workers, taxi drivers, and Indigenous people have all taken to the streets to protest rising fuel costs.
In Guatemala, protests have spread across 27 cities with over 40 demonstrations recorded by September 4. The country is experiencing both higher fuel prices due to the Middle East conflict and El Niño-related droughts.
Oil prices dipped on Wednesday but remained above $100 USD per barrel. Diesel has seen an even greater increase, rising about 60% since late February. Prior to the US and Israel's attack on Iran in February, oil prices were between $60-$70 a barrel.
