Fuel Prices Soar to Record Highs in Bangladesh Amid Global Market Volatility
Fuel prices in Bangladesh have reached record highs, but the increase is not directly related to global market fluctuations. Despite Brent crude oil prices on the international market being well below their historical peak, the government has raised the prices of all four types of fuel by BDT 20 per litre.
This price hike brings the cost of diesel, kerosene, petrol, and octane to their highest levels ever in Bangladesh. Diesel now costs BDT 135 per litre, up from BDT 115; kerosene is at BDT 155 per litre, up from BDT 135; petrol is priced at BDT 160 per litre, up from BTD 140; and octane is at BDT 165 per litre, up from BDT 145.
The government has defended the price increase, citing concerns over smuggling to neighboring countries and the need to prevent losses incurred by Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC). However, critics argue that a more measured approach could have been taken instead of raising all fuel prices equally.
