Fuel Prices Soar to Record Levels Amid US-Iran Conflict
Protests against skyrocketing fuel prices and rolling blackouts have erupted around the world, fueled by the ongoing US-Iran conflict. Oil prices climbed above $100 per barrel last week after further US strikes on Iranian oil tankers in the Gulf and renewed fighting in Yemen threatened shipping in the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
In the United States, gas prices are expected to rise 30% due to the Iran war, while households reliant on heating oil will face stark warnings from analysts. For less wealthy nations, the hit to their national finances has been severe, with patience wearing thin.
Protests have broken out in several countries, including Syria, where demonstrators burned tires and blocked roads in response to a 40% hike in diesel prices and over 25% increase in gas prices. In Guatemala, organized truckers and other protesters blocked highways and caused damage to demand immediate government action.
In Portugal, local business leaders and workers marched to the prime minister's home to protest both rising gas prices and the soaring cost of living. Meanwhile, fishermen in France blockaded a major fuel depot to protest rising fuel prices, while workers in the Philippines went on strike to call for government subsidies and scrapped fuel taxes.
