Futures Fall as Oil Prices Surge to New Highs
US stock futures are trending lower on Wednesday as oil prices and Treasury yields rise. The S&P 500, Dow Jones, and Nasdaq futures are all down between 0.1% and 0.3%. Oil prices have increased to between $90 and $100 per barrel due to ongoing tensions with Iran, contributing to stubborn inflation.
Investors are demanding higher returns when buying US debt, which is pushing down the price of Treasurys and driving up yields to their highest levels in 24 years. The 10-year Treasury yield has reached 5.24% and the 30-year Treasury yield has fallen to 5.57%. These levels have not been seen since 2007 and 2004, respectively.
Treasury yields are rising due to concerns about inflation, Washington's massive debt load, and signs of a solid US economy despite its challenges. Higher yields make borrowing money more expensive for everyone and put downward pressure on stocks and other investments.
