Futures Market Positioning Shifts Across Major Commodities
The latest Commitments of Traders report from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission reveals shifts in futures market positioning across major commodities.
On September 1, 2026, open interest for SRW wheat on the Chicago Board of Trade stood at 470,560 contracts, with producers holding 42,440 long positions and 144,846 short positions. Managed money held 109,614 longs and 94,710 shorts.
For HRW wheat, open interest was 306,154, with producers at 16,088 longs and 128,345 shorts, and managed money holding 82,473 longs and 33,647 shorts. HRSpring wheat on the MIAX Futures Exchange saw open interest of 77,320, with producers at 31,983 longs and 62,634 shorts.
Corn and soybeans also showed notable shifts in market positioning. Corn on the Chicago Board of Trade had open interest of 1,764,182, with producer/merchant positions at 259,861 longs and 1,060,004 shorts, while managed money held 467,856 longs and 66,853 shorts.
The report also touched on energy markets. WTI crude oil on ICE Futures Europe had open interest of 767,357, with producers at 413,369 longs and 319,322 shorts. Meanwhile, gold on COMEX saw open interest of 415,196, with managed money holding 149,721 longs and 12,950 shorts.
