G7 Condemns Houthi Attacks on Saudi Arabia, Urges Iran to Cut Support
G7 nations issued a joint statement condemning recent Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and urging Iran to cut support for the Yemen-based movement. The move marks a show of solidarity with Riyadh as the Houthis have made significant gains in their lightning offensive, taking control of Yemen's entire Red Sea coast.
The G7 leaders representing Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States called on the Houthis to immediately cease all military actions. They also accused Iran of violating past UN Security Council resolutions by arming and supporting the Houthis.
Saudi Arabia has led a coalition backing the internationally recognized government in Yemen since 2015. The war, which began in 2014 with the Houthi capture of the capital Sanaa, had largely frozen since 2022 but resumed in July.
The Houthi movement has staged attacks on Saudi oil facilities and infrastructure, including a strike on Riyadh over the weekend that marked the first to target the Saudi capital in years. The UK and France have pledged support for Saudi Arabia, with Britain agreeing to provide air-to-air refueling for Saudi jets and France offering to secure Saudi energy infrastructure.
