G7 Nations Unleash Emergency Oil Release Amid Soaring Prices
The G7 nations have announced plans to release 100 million barrels of oil and fuel products in an effort to stabilize the global market and bring down prices, which have soared due to the ongoing Iran war and trade tensions. According to President Donald Trump, the release will start with 'substantial' amounts of diesel, following record high prices in the United States.
The move follows a previous agreement in March for International Energy Agency member countries to release 426 million barrels of oil and products. The G7 countries, including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US, will contribute to this effort. The European Union has committed about 92 million barrels, with a focus on refined products such as diesel.
France, which holds the rotating presidency of the G7 group, made the announcement after videoconference talks between Macron and other leaders. The release is expected to bring down prices by 25-50 cents per gallon in the US within a few weeks, according to Michael Lynch, distinguished fellow at Energy Policy Research Foundation.
However, not everyone agrees with this decision. Jim Krane, energy research fellow at Rice University's Baker Institute, warned that draining stocks could reduce retail fuel prices temporarily but leave Europe with less emergency cover in the long run.
