G7 Oil Release Aims to Contain Energy Crisis, But Experts Warn of Limitations
The Group of Seven (G7) countries have announced a plan to release 100 million barrels of crude oil and refined petroleum products from emergency reserves. This decision aims to mitigate an energy crisis caused by geopolitical tensions disrupting supply routes, tightening diesel markets, and pushing fuel prices higher.
The release will be coordinated through the International Energy Agency (IEA) over four months, with a significant volume of diesel made available within the first 20 days. The G7 countries have also agreed to coordinate refinery maintenance, increase utilization where feasible, and avoid restrictions on energy exports among themselves.
However, experts warn that emergency reserves cannot guarantee energy security when underlying sources of instability remain unresolved. They highlight that one hundred million barrels is a substantial release but not a permanent addition to global production.
