G7 Releases 100 Million Barrels to Combat Record Diesel Prices
The Group of Seven (G7) wealthy democracies have announced plans to release 100 million barrels of oil and fuel products in an effort to stabilize the global market and lower prices. The move comes as diesel fuel has hit record high prices in both the US and Europe, with a national average price of $6.37 per gallon in the US on Friday.
According to President Donald Trump, who made the announcement via social media, the release will start immediately with 'substantial' amounts of diesel within the next 20 days, followed by the remaining barrels over four months. The G7 countries, which include Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US, as well as EU representation, agreed not to limit energy exports to each other.
Michael Lynch, a distinguished fellow at Energy Policy Research Foundation, estimated that the release could lower prices by 25-50 cents per gallon after a few weeks. However, some analysts warned that the emergency release could be a short-term fix with long-term consequences, including reducing strategic reserves in Europe and potentially leading to higher prices in the future.
