G7 Reserve Release and Rising Exports Push Oil Prices Lower

Oil prices dipped on October 5 as global supply concerns eased following actions by the Group of Seven (G7) countries and rising exports from the Middle East. Brent crude futures dropped by 66 cents, or 0.65%, to $101.59 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell by 95 cents, or 1.03%, to $90.12 per barrel. These declines reversed much of the gains made in the previous week.

The G7's decision to release 100 million barrels of diesel and crude oil from strategic reserves, coupled with a pledge to avoid restricting energy exports, contributed to the price drop. This move came under pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump. Additionally, Middle East oil exports surpassed prewar levels on four of the last seven days of September, despite attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM Trade, noted that the G7's reserve release helped alleviate some supply-related price pressures. He also observed growing confidence that Saudi Arabian export volumes are returning to prewar levels, although higher costs and less efficient routes are being used for transportation.

The recent price movements follow a volatile period influenced by geopolitical tensions, including U.S. strikes on Iran and disrupted supplies from the Middle East. Oil prices had previously reached their highest levels in over six weeks amid escalating tensions in the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz.
