G7 Unleashes 100M Barrels of Diesel and Crude Amid Export Threat
The Group of Seven (G7) has agreed to release 100 million barrels of stockpiled diesel and crude oil over four months. The decision comes after the US threatened to halt diesel exports to Europe, which relies on the US for about one-third of its diesel demand.
During the first 20 days, the G7 will prioritize large releases of diesel to address supply shortages. This move is expected to ease pressure on oil prices, with Brent crude and WTI prices already falling in response to the news.
The release of 100 million barrels is a significant step, but it's worth noting that this amount represents only about two weeks' worth of global oil consumption at current levels. The G7's decision was made after French President Emmanuel Macron chaired an Oct. 2 meeting, where the US raised the prospect of banning diesel exports to Europe.
US President Donald Trump said on Oct. 2 that he would not impose an export ban and praised Europe's decision to release stockpiled diesel as a 'great thing.' Oil prices fell in response, with Brent crude for December delivery slipping 0.06% to $102.25 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate for November delivery fell 1.90% to $91.11.
