Commodity suppliers in Bangladesh have expressed concern over the impact of the ongoing gas crisis on the country's economy, warning that supply chain problems could arise if the situation is not addressed.

At a meeting held at the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) office, industry leaders urged the government to ensure uninterrupted gas and electricity supply to their factories. The average daily gas supply in August fell to 2,235 million cubic feet per day, the lowest level recorded for the month in a decade.

Shafiul Athar Taslim, director of finance and operation at TK Group, said one of his company's two factories had been closed for two months due to the gas crisis. He called on the government to prioritize utility supplies for companies producing essential commodities, just as it does for electricity and fertilizer production.

Biswajit Saha, director of corporate and regulatory affairs at City Group, warned that supply problems could emerge during Ramadan, expected to begin in early February 2027. He urged authorities to monitor the opening of Letters of Credit (LCs) for essential commodities such as sugar, wheat, and lentils.
