Gas Price Surge Defies EPA Waivers Amid Geopolitical Tensions
The price of RBOB gasoline futures has surged despite EPA waivers that were supposed to lower pump costs. According to data from Argus, U.S. gasoline spot prices climbed 87 to 119 cents per gallon across major regional benchmarks in 2026. The Environmental Protection Agency expanded butane blending limits in an effort to reduce fuel costs, but market fundamentals overrode the regulatory intervention.
Shrinking national inventories and elevated crude costs have pushed New York Harbor RBOB futures significantly higher. Traders are now focusing on fundamental supply constraints rather than policy announcements.
The geopolitical situation is also contributing to the rise in gas prices. Middle East tensions are disrupting global oil shipping routes, restricting crude supplies from overseas producers. This has led to a bullish risk premium being anchored into RBOB futures pricing.
