Gas Prices Soar as Strait of Hormuz Tensions Escalate
European natural gas prices have surged to a three-year high as renewed US military strikes on Iran raised fears of Middle East supply disruptions. The benchmark Dutch TTF futures spiked to levels not seen since January 2023 following Tuesday's attacks, which sparked concerns over potential transit bottlenecks through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
While European gas storage levels remain stable, traders quickly priced in a geopolitical risk premium. This means that they expect disruptions in the supply chain and are adjusting prices accordingly.
Analysts warn that sustained tensions could trigger intense competition with Asian buyers for available liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes, driving up costs ahead of winter.
