Gas Prices Spike to Near-Historic Levels in North Carolina
Gas prices in North Carolina have surged to $4.03 per gallon on average as of September 15, according to AAA. This marks a significant increase from previous weeks, with prices rising by 13 cents nationally since last week's report. The national average for regular gasoline has reached $4.316 per gallon, a figure comparable to early June levels.
The recent price hike can be attributed to ongoing disruptions in major oil shipping lanes in the Middle East. Iran and its allies have continued to disrupt shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which has led to volatility in crude oil prices. As a result, crude oil prices have climbed back into the $100 per barrel range for the first time since July.
Asheville ranks second among North Carolina cities with the highest gas prices, with an average price of $4.0569 per gallon as of September 15. One year ago on the same date, the price was $2.869, about $1.187 lower. The Goldsboro area has the lowest gas prices in the state, with an average cost of $3.924 per gallon.
