Gaza's Energy Crisis Spirals Out of Control as Engine Oil Prices Soar
Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has sounded the alarm over the dire situation in Gaza, where restrictions on engine oil and spare parts are exacerbating an energy crisis.
The organisation reported that the supply of engine oil is severely limited, with prices skyrocketing to over $1,300 per liter by the end of July. This represents a 20-fold increase in just six months.
As a result, hospitals and other critical facilities in Gaza are struggling to maintain power, relying on generators due to disrupted electricity supplies and widespread damage to the network.
'When generators break down, hospitals are at risk,' said Ola Bardawil, MSF's deputy project coordinator. 'Newborn babies in incubators, people who rely on oxygen generators, or those in need of lifesaving surgery will suffer.'
