Germany Downplays Gas Storage Worries Amid Refill Season Lag
The German government has sought to calm concerns over the country's low natural gas storage levels. According to official data, Germany's storage sites stood at just 50.19% full as of Friday, well below the European average of 61.82%. This is a significant shortfall, especially given that this point in the refill season typically sees higher storage levels.
Despite acknowledging the shortfall, the Economic Affairs and Energy Ministry has stated that it does not expect a gas shortage this winter. The ministry cited broader supply options and readiness to intervene if needed as reasons for its confidence. It emphasized that security of supply depends on multiple factors, including storage, pipeline imports, LNG, infrastructure, and demand.
The government also signaled its willingness to step in if conditions deteriorate, but stressed that primary responsibility still rests with the market. The ministry cautioned against premature state purchases, warning that they could drive up prices and weaken the market's preparedness.
