Germany Dumbs Down Commemorative Coins Amid Rising Silver Prices

Germany has been quietly reducing the precious metal content of its commemorative coins. In October 2025, the country halted the release of two commemorative coins due to the soaring price of their silver content. The Bundesbank stated that this decision was made by the Federal Ministry of Finance.

The affected coins were part of an ongoing series marking German culture and innovation. Although the spot price of silver hasn't improved since October 2025, it has increased significantly, from just under $50 an ounce to over $70 an ounce in more than five months.

In March, the German government announced that it would be debasing its future commemorative silver coins issued in uncirculated quality. Starting with future €35 and €50 coins, these will be composed of more copper at the expense of the silver previously planned to be part of the mix.
