Germany's Gas Storage at Record Low Ahead of Winter

Germany's natural gas storage sites are only 57% full as of late September, raising concerns about energy security in Europe's largest economy. This is well below the European average and a historic low for this time of year.

Despite these low storage levels, German gas importer VNG says it faces no immediate supply risk thanks to its broader and more resilient import portfolio compared to 2022's energy crisis.

VNG CEO Ulf Heitmueller attributed the robust system to increased access to liquefied natural gas (LNG) and a broadened position in terms of sources of supply. VNG procured 409 terawatt hours (TWh) of gas in 2025, making it one of Germany's largest importers.
