Germany's Gas Storage Levels Hit 15-Year Low Amid Winter Supply Concerns
Germany is facing a potential winter gas crunch as its natural gas storage levels hit a 15-year low. According to the Energy Storage Initiative (INES), Germany's facilities were only around 53% full at the beginning of September, down from 71% at the same time last year.
The country may manage to raise storage levels to roughly 77% by November 1, but INES warns that this would not be enough to protect against extremely cold weather. 'A storage level of 77 percent will not be sufficient in extremely cold conditions,' said Sebastian Heinermann, INES Managing Director.
The reluctance of gas companies to replenish reserves is also linked to market conditions. High gas prices and a relatively weak difference between summer and winter prices have reduced the financial incentive to buy gas now and store it for later use.
