Gevo Unveils Ambitious North Dakota Expansion Plans
Gevo Inc (NASDAQ:GEVO) is working towards completing planning for its second ethanol plant at its North Dakota site by the end of this year. The expanded facility would roughly double low-carbon ethanol capacity and feed a planned alcohol-to-jet fuel project.
The company has reorganized itself around commercial execution, focusing on improving cash generation, growing the value of its carbon business, running and expanding the North Dakota operation reliably, and converting development projects into financeable ventures.
Gevo's existing facility at Richardton, North Dakota, produces ethanol from locally grown corn and pairs it with carbon capture and permanent underground sequestration through a dedicated deep injection well. This combination is unusual in the industry, as most American ethanol plants lack capture infrastructure or rely on pipelines to transport captured carbon dioxide.
The company's longer-horizon ambition centers on converting ethanol into synthetic aviation fuel through an alcohol-to-jet pathway, with a facility co-located at the North Dakota site planned to take a substantial share of low-carbon ethanol produced there and convert it into jet fuel.
