Ghana's Fuel Price Hike Sparks Frustration Over Unfulfilled Election Promises
Member of Parliament (MP) for Akuapem North Constituency Sammi Awuku has expressed concern over recent fuel price increases in Ghana. In a Facebook post, he noted that despite promises made during the 2024 election campaign to reduce the burden on consumers, nothing tangible seems to be happening.
The latest increase in petrol and diesel prices, according to the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), will see petrol prices set at GH¢14.53 per litre and diesel at GH¢16.97 per litre for the August pricing window. However, some Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have already adjusted their prices, with some diesel prices going above GH¢18 per litre.
Awuku questioned whether the increases are solely due to global crude oil prices, referencing a previous period when Brent crude prices fell but fuel prices did not reduce. He argued that the NPA's price floor prevented pump prices from falling.
