GLD vs SIL: Which Fund Offers Better Exposure to Precious Metals

Instruments
Gold Silver
Share

The SPDR Gold Shares ETF (GLD) and Global X - Silver Miners ETF (SIL) provide investors with exposure to physical gold bullion and silver mining companies, respectively.

While both funds offer a way to participate in the precious metals market, they have distinct characteristics. The GLD fund tracks the price of physical gold and has an expense ratio of 0.40%, making it the more affordable choice for investors. In contrast, SIL invests in silver mining companies and has an expense ratio of 0.65%.

A key difference between the two funds is their sensitivity to market conditions. GLD is a classic hedge against currency devaluation and provides exposure to gold's price movements. SIL, on the other hand, offers investors a way to play the silver market through mining companies, which can provide a more stable source of returns.

The performance of the two funds has been mixed over the past five years. GLD has returned 17.5% and 11.3% in the 5- and 10-year time frames, respectively, while SIL has returned 14% and 7.6% during the same periods. However, SIL outperformed GLD in the 3-year period, with a return of 46% compared to 27.7% for GLD.
