Global Central Banks Accumulate Trillions in Assets Amidst Economic Uncertainty

Central banks have become increasingly prominent in recent years, playing a crucial role in maintaining monetary and economic stability. One of their most important functions is managing national currencies and acting as financial anchors for their governments.

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, central banks intervened aggressively to cushion economies, but then shifted course as inflation surged, raising interest rates and tightening monetary conditions to contain price pressures.

The size of their balance sheets reflects their significant financial firepower. These assets include government bonds, foreign currencies, gold, equities, and other investments, which give central banks the ability to influence borrowing costs, support currencies, inject liquidity into financial markets, and even help stabilize entire economies.

The Bank of England holds more than $1 trillion in assets, with a significant share stemming from purchases of British government bonds. The Swiss National Bank has assets worth approximately $1.1 trillion, including billions of dollars in shares of major U.S. technology companies like Apple and Amazon.
