Trump Sends Nuclear Deal to Congress Amid Israeli Normalization Demands
US President Donald Trump has submitted the landmark nuclear cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia for congressional review. The deal, which was originally signed last month, aims to allow American companies to play a major role in developing Saudi Arabia's civilian nuclear energy program.
The agreement is expected to involve the construction of US-designed nuclear reactors in Saudi Arabia and could be worth tens of billions of dollars. Riyadh says it wants nuclear power to meet growing domestic energy demand, reduce oil consumption at home, and free up more crude for export.
However, concerns over nuclear proliferation have been raised, as the deal does not permanently bar Saudi Arabia from reprocessing nuclear fuel or enrichment, which could potentially be used to make weapons. Trump has tied the agreement to Saudi Arabia formally joining the Abraham Accords and establishing diplomatic relations with Israel.
