Global Food Prices Rise 1.9% in August Amid Weather Risks and Trade Disruptions
Global food prices rose by 1.9% in August, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). This increase is attributed to various factors, including weather risks, disruptions to trade routes, and geopolitical tensions.
The FAO Sugar Price Index recorded a significant monthly jump of 11.9%, reaching its highest level since June 2025. Lower forecasts for sugar beet yields in the European Union and El Niño-related conditions affecting production prospects in key Asian producers contributed to this increase.
Wheat prices also rose by 2.6% during August, with international prices increasing across all major grains. This is attributed to persistent disruption to Black Sea export logistics, weaker production prospects in parts of Europe, and a weaker US dollar.
