Global food prices have risen again, according to the latest report from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The FAO Food Price Index averaged 131.1 points in July, up 0.6% from June and 1.0% higher than the same month last year.

The increase was mainly driven by higher prices for cereals, vegetable oils, and sugar. Cereal prices rose 3.4%, with wheat prices increasing 5.8% due to concerns over potential disruptions to grain exports from the Black Sea region and heatwaves affecting major wheat-producing regions.

Vegetable oil prices reached a two-year high, driven by robust biodiesel demand in Indonesia and higher crude oil prices making biofuels more attractive. Sugar prices rose 5.6% due to hot and dry weather in Europe, unfavorable weather in Asia, and Brazil's energy policy diverting sugarcane to ethanol production.

However, meat and dairy prices declined, partially offsetting the increases in other categories. The FAO warned that risks remain elevated due to extreme weather linked to climate change, geopolitical tensions, and uncertainty surrounding international trade routes.
