Global Food Prices Soar Amid Russia-Ukraine Conflict
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reported that global food prices reached a four-year high in August, driven by disruptions to grain export amid Russia's war against Ukraine. The FAO's Food Price Index averaged 133.3 points in August, its highest since March 2022.
Prices rose across all commodity groups, with the total index remaining about 16% below the peak attained in the early days of Russia's full-scale invasion. Grain prices increased by 2.5 points from the previous month due to 'continued uncertainty surrounding Black Sea export flows,' according to the FAO.
Disruptions to Black Sea shipping were repeatedly cited as a contributing factor, along with weather concerns and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The cost of wheat, corn, sorghum, barley, and rice also increased worldwide.
