Global Food Prices Soar to Nearly Four-Year High
Global food prices have surged to their highest level since November 2022, according to the FAO Food Price Index. The index averaged 133.3 points in August, a 1.9% increase from July and 2.5% higher than a year ago.
The price increases affected all major food groups, with sugar seeing the sharpest monthly rise of 11.9%. The sugar price index jumped to its highest level since June 2025 due to worsening forecasts for the European Union's sugar beet harvest and an expected decline in Brazilian production.
Wheat prices rose by 2.6% over the month, with traders factoring in risks associated with disruptions to Black Sea exports and crop damage caused by hot summer temperatures in Europe.
