Global Food Security on Thin Ice Amid Black Sea Disruptions
The global food security situation is growing increasingly precarious due to several converging factors. The ongoing conflict in the Black Sea region, droughts in Europe and a crisis at the Strait of Hormuz are all putting pressure on wheat supplies.
Russia and Ukraine, which account for around 27% of global wheat exports, are facing significant disruptions to their shipments. Ukrainian Agriculture Minister Taras Vysotsky described the current situation as 'a disaster' and 'the hardest since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.'
The Black Sea Grain Initiative, modelled on a similar agreement reached in 2022, is seen as a potential solution to restore trade. However, Ukraine is hesitant to rely on the initiative due to concerns about the sustainability of the arrangement.
