Gold and Silver Price Surge Pre-Meeting as Hike Odds Plummet

The Federal Reserve's July meeting minutes are set to be released today at 2:00 p.m. Eastern, but gold and silver have already made their move. As of 8:45 a.m., gold has reached $4,417.55 an ounce, up 1.92% on the day, while silver climbed harder to touch $65.04, a 2.67% jump.

The market is trading on fresh data that has moved since the Fed's last meeting, where three regional bank presidents voted 9 to 3 to hold rates steady but dissented in favor of a hike. Three weeks of new data have shifted the odds from a pre-meeting peak near 82% for a hike down to roughly 30% today.

Traders are adding exposure now that they expect a hold rather than a hike, with managed money's net long position in gold futures at 217,940 contracts, up from 197,634 the week before. The market has priced most of its shift toward a hold, though not everyone agrees that's the right call.

The falling gold-silver ratio measures how many ounces of silver buy one ounce of gold and tells today's real story. Silver outperformed gold, signaling investors expect growth alongside falling rates, not just a defensive retreat into hard money. The 10-year real yield sits at 2.41% as of August 14, making it cheaper to hold metal that pays no interest.

The market has swung hike odds by 50 percentage points or more without a single word from the Fed itself landing in between. A central bank that no longer telegraphs its intentions between meetings hands the reins to whatever data lands next, making markets less predictable for real yields than they've been in most of the last decade.
