Silver Surges Amid AI Data Center Boom
Silver prices have rebounded in August after hitting a low of around $56 an ounce. The metal's value has increased by 8% over the past week, reaching above $64 an ounce.
This uptrend is attributed to the growing demand for silver from data centers, particularly those focused on artificial intelligence (AI). Data center spending is expected to reach a staggering $7 trillion by 2030, according to McKinsey estimates. Major hyperscalers like Meta Platforms, Amazon, Alphabet, and Microsoft are continuing their investments in this area.
The stocks of silver producers such as First Majestic Silver, Wheaton Precious Metals, and Pan American Silver have also seen significant gains in August. Wheaton Precious Metals reported stellar second-quarter results, with earnings nearly doubling from the same period last year and revenue jumping 85%. However, it's worth noting that The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team did not include Wheaton Precious Metals among their top picks.
A good way to invest directly in physical silver is through the iShares Silver Trust (SLV), which owns silver bars stored in bank vaults in London and New York. The exchange-traded fund has seen a 7% increase over the past month.
