Gold and Silver Prices Plummet $650B Amid Interest Rate Hike Expectations
Gold and Silver prices plummeted to five-week lows in early Monday trading, wiping out approximately $650 billion from their market value. This sudden drop has left investors perplexed, wondering if it's a violent correction following a massive rally or a broader shift in investor positioning due to changing Fed policy, inflation expectations, oil prices, and global liquidity.
The spot price of Gold fell 2.80% from Monday's open, extending its decline since the last week of August. It currently trades at $4,288, reflecting a 23.4% pullback from its all-time high in January 2026. Similarly, Spot Silver has lost approximately 4.5% of its value during the current trading session, marking a 12.71% decline since the last week of August and a 48.26% drop from its all-time high in January.
The sharp decline in Gold and Silver prices triggered a contraction in institutional ETF Net Asset Value (NAV), immediate paper wealth destruction, leveraged derivatives liquidation, cascading margin calls that triggered automated selling, Central Bank reserve revaluation, and sovereign balance sheet reduction.
