Gold Bears Target 4,000 Ahead of Potential Rebound
Gold prices continue to face downward pressure as bearish momentum strengthens. Futures traders are reducing their long positions, and the metal is approaching the key psychological level of $4,000. While this level could prove difficult to break, it might also serve as a foundation for a potential rebound.
According to the latest Commitments of Traders (COT) report, traders remain net-long on CME gold futures but with diminishing confidence. Both large speculators and managed funds have trimmed their long positions over the past five weeks. Additionally, managed funds have increased their gross shorts, signaling a shift in market sentiment.
Options traders are also showing a slightly more bearish outlook, with risk reversals indicating higher demand for put options over call options. Despite this, the bearish sentiment is not extreme, possibly due to the significance of the $4,000 level.
Technical analysis of the weekly chart shows increased bearish momentum, with gold trading within striking distance of $4,000. The US dollar's momentum remains upward but shows early signs of fatigue, which could hint at a near-term top. On the daily chart, the bearish trend continues, but support levels at $4,082 and $4,100 could prevent a clean break below $4,000.
The bias remains for bears to fade rallies towards $4,000, where gold may find support and stage a rebound. This would also allow the US dollar to form a near-term top, potentially providing gold with some relief.
