Gold Enters Critical Period Amid Hawkish Fed Signals and Structural Bid

The gold market has entered a critical period following a 3.2 percent weekly decline to $4,454.60 per troy ounce. The selloff was triggered by Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish comments at Jackson Hole, which sent shockwaves through rate-sensitive assets and boosted market pricing for a September rate hike to above 60 percent.

The fundamental arithmetic behind Warsh's stance is straightforward: core inflation has overshot the Fed's 2 percent target for more than five years, while unemployment is near full capacity. Analysts argue this combination leaves the central bank with scant room to maintain its current trajectory, making it harder for gold to compete as a zero-yield asset.

Despite the short-term downturn, the structural bid beneath gold remains intact, with central banks purchasing a net 289 tonnes in the second quarter and around 45 percent of surveyed institutions intending to keep adding to their reserves. This persistent buyer base has cushioned downside moves since January's record high of $5,600.

The coming days will determine whether this repricing hardens into a new reality, with key data points including Wednesday's speech from Fed Governor Christopher Waller on the economic outlook and Friday's August jobs report. The Fed's verdict is set to land on September 15-16.
