Gold nears $4,000 as bearish momentum builds
Gold prices continue to face downward pressure as bearish sentiment intensifies. Futures traders are reducing their long positions, bringing prices dangerously close to the $4,000 mark. While this level is a major psychological support, its significance could trigger a rebound if breached.
The latest COT report from the CFTC indicates that traders, although still net-long on CME gold futures, are becoming less confident. Large speculators and managed funds have trimmed their long positions over the past five weeks, while managed funds have slightly increased their gross shorts. Options traders are also leaning bearish, with risk reversals showing higher demand for puts over calls.
Technical analysis of the weekly chart reveals growing bearish momentum, with gold now within a week's typical range of $4,000. Despite this, the level's psychological importance may lead to a volatile shakeout before a potential countertrend bounce. The US dollar's momentum still points higher, but signs of fatigue suggest gold's decline may be nearing its end.
On the daily chart, the bearish outlook persists, though prices remain above last week's low. The $4,200 area could be reclaimed soon, but rallies towards the monthly pivot near $4,300 or the 200-day EMA at $4,331.8 may be faded by bears. On the downside, support levels include the high-volume node at $4,082 and the $4,100 handle before $4,000.
The overall bias is for bears to fade rallies towards $4,000, where gold is expected to find support and stage a rebound. This would also allow the US dollar to potentially form a near-term top, giving gold some relief.
