Gold Price Recovery: Supply Constraints Keep $10,000 Target Alive

Gold prices have rebounded strongly after falling below $4,000 an ounce in July. Futures closed at $4,380.40 on August 14, up 8.18% over two weeks. Despite this recovery, gold remains 17.64% below its January record of $5,318.40.

Jeff Currie, a prominent commodities expert, still expects gold to reach $10,000 an ounce in the long term. He argues that years of weak mining investment have left producers struggling to expand supply quickly. This, combined with rising demand for physical resources due to artificial intelligence infrastructure development, creates a favorable setup for higher prices.

The key constraint on future supply is mining investment. Capital spending by the top 20 mining companies remains about 40% below its 2012 peak. New mines take years to develop, and higher prices cannot immediately create additional production. This means that gold's price recovery may be prolonged, with supply remaining constrained for some time.
