Gold Prices Plummet: Will the Bear Case Hold?
Gold prices have taken a hit in 2026, dropping by over 20% from their record high set in January. The metal's price currently ranges from $4,180 to $4,270 an ounce, depending on the data source and day. For UK investors, the price in pounds matters too, with the range currently at £3,040 to £3,700 an ounce.
The decline is attributed to higher interest rates, which make cash and bonds more attractive than gold. Central bank buying has also become less of a factor, with the World Gold Council revising its Q1 2026 purchases down sharply from 244 tonnes to 56.5 tonnes. Additionally, many investors have taken profits after the metal's impressive return in 2025.
Forecasts for gold prices have been cut dramatically, with banks now predicting a range of $4,450 to $5,100 at year-end 2026. While some analysts still see potential for higher prices in 2027, many are cautious about the short-term outlook due to rate rises and uncertainty surrounding the upcoming Federal Reserve meeting on October 27-28.
